ESTA Conference 2024

Friday 27th – Sunday 29th September 2024

Conference Theme: Addressing Global Challenges

Department of Earth, Ocean and Ecological Sciences

Welcome

Conference theme

In the School of Environmental Sciences, we study our planet from the atmosphere and from its surface to the deep Earth, and in doing so we explore the diverse ways in which societies, communities and ecosystems across the planet respond to differing aspects of environmental, economic, and social change. Researchers in the school have global experience and are leading experts in a wide range of fields such as:

  • geothermal geoscience and development
  • the geomechanically and geochemical processes resulting from carbon capture and storage
  • quantifying past and future changes in Arctic ecosystems by identifying the response in food webs
  • understanding mineral processes controlling critical minerals development
  • seismic monitoring of eruptive behaviour.

Their research focusses on issues such as understanding how the ocean is responding to climate change, developing technologies for generating renewable and sustainable energy, using geological carbon storage to reduce carbon emissions, developing sustainable routes to exploration, extraction, substitution, and recycling of critical minerals. As a result, the conference theme chosen for 2024 is “Addressing Global Challenges”.
